7 of the best Math apps for iPad – STEM series

We’ve put together a list of the best math apps for iPad and iOS, that come highly recommended by both teachers and parents. In fact, some of them were even designed by teachers themselves! From challenging puzzles, to basic flash card drills, this list features apps focused on improving math skills across K-5th Grade levels. These math apps for iPad are a great way to liven up your maths lesson, and a brilliant way to make homework fun.

1. Math vs Zombies 

This game encourages children to use their math skills to save and treat infected zombies. Your child is part of a highly trained team of scientists who use their maths skills to save the world. The game has 111 levels that test and sharpen addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. The detailed Report Card section allows parents and teachers to track progress and identify concepts that students are struggling with. The game is aligned with Common Core standards for K-4th grade. 


2. Operation Maths

In this game, children need to defeat Dr. Odd by completing timed maths missions. The app includes over 100 missions that test addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Teachers praise this app as a great alternative for traditional flash card drills and even homework assignments.


3. Motion Math: Cupcake 

Children will sharpen their maths skills by running their very own cupcake delivery business. They’ll learn about word problems, proportions, mental maths problem as they stock up on ingredients, set prices, create cupcakes and deliver them to customers. Motion Math has several instructional math apps available, and it’s worth exploring their entire range here.


4. Mathspace 

Mathspace is an incredible app, with a bank of over 70000 maths questions that cover algebra, geometry, probability and statistics. Mathspace allows students to complete online problems with their own, fully worked solutions. It provides instant feedback and help at every step. 5. Monster Math: Games for Kids

Great for 1st-5th graders, this app lets children practice addition, subtraction, division, times tables and word problems. Battle Troggles and Minions, explore new worlds and find unexpected allies to help you on your quest. With challenging drills and quizzes, as well as a useful practice mode, children can improve their math skills at their own pace. Monster Math also includes in-depth reporting to identify which areas need more attention. This game is a fun way to sharpen arithmetic!


6. Addition and Multiplication Number Bubbles

This free app includes two games – one for addition and one for multiplication. This basic app is an entertaining way to improve basic maths skills. Even though it doesn’t come with animated characters, or a lengthy features list, it’s a hit with teachers and a great substitute for flash card drills.


7. Multiplication Flash Cards

This is another free app that makes use of flash card drills to sharpen math, and specifically multiplication skills. This highly fun and intuitive game was designed by parents and teachers and is a great way to make homework sessions fun and entertaining.
