Education technology and the classroom

From the early days of Gutenberg’s printing press to the cloud-based learning of today, technology and education have always gone hand in hand. As such, it’s only natural for technological developments to impact education on a fundamental level. In this blog post, we’ll dive into how education technology in the digital age has changed the classroom.

Prep time is cut down with education technology

A teacher’s primary function in class is to teach. They shouldn’t have to spend most of their time planning and preparing course materials. Thankfully, there are many apps and software suites available that simplify this process. Going digital, teachers can access communities where huge databases of lesson plans and templates are readily available.

The classroom becomes collaborative and interactive

One of the biggest ways education technology has changed the classroom is that it has shifted the class dynamic from passive to active. With educational technology, you can customise classroom interaction, and students can interact with the course materials in different ways. Thanks to digital apps, every student has access to all vast quantities of information in practically any format they need. This frees up a lot of time for the teacher to provide added value to their students through further insights, instead of blandly lecturing a bored classroom.

Students benefit from a more personalised trajectory

Another way that education technology has changed the classroom is that students can now follow a personalised trajectory. Through digital monitoring, teachers can identify who’s being active in class and how well students respond to the curriculum. Instant feedback helps them identify their students’ individual strengths and weaknesses. They can then proceed to tweak every student’s curriculum to best suit those strengths and weaknesses. Being able to customise a student’s class experience encourages them to become more active, seek out information and eventually learn more than they would have digital technology not been available.

Students can learn outside the classroom

Education technology has effectively transcended school boundaries, as students can learn remotely and catch up on school news and information wherever they have a connected mobile device. As such, digital technology is a gateway through which students can continuously learn, no longer restricted by the physical limitations of a classroom. Students are usually enthusiastic about this change – who wouldn’t want to learn using their smartphone?

But it must remain a controlled environment

For all the positive ways educational technology has changed the classroom, digital tools are not without their faults. Unsavoury content, cyberbullying and inappropriate use of digital privileges by students are all issues that your school needs to tackle. Educators need to have control over what can be accessed, and monitor how students interact with their devices. Educational technology has amazing potential, but it needs to be used responsibly for maximum benefit in the classroom.
